With over 200 languages spoken, New York City embodies cultural diversity like no other, according to the Department of City Planning.
This election, US ballots will be available in five languages, including Bengali.
Among the languages chosen, Bengali is the sole representative of Indian languages on US ballots.
The inclusion of Bengali isn’t just a courtesy – it’s required by law in New York City.
NYC is obligated to provide Bengali ballots and voting materials to ensure access for Bengali-speaking voters.
Bengali-language ballots were introduced following a federal mandate under the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
The inclusion of Bengali on ballots is expected to boost voter participation among Bengali-speaking citizens.
Bengali-speaking voters, including those from India and Bangladesh, will have a stronger voice in this election.
