Leaders supporting India’s bid for permanent seat on UNSC

It argues that the 15-nation council founded in 1945 is not fit for purpose in the 21st Century and does not reflect contemporary geo-political realities.

India has been emphasising that it rightly deserves a place at the UN high table as a permanent member.

At present, the UNSC comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member countries which are elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The five permanent members are Russia, the UK, China, France and the United States.

The US President has been supporting India’s bid since 2019 and has raised it several since then.

Emmanuel Macron

The French President voiced his support in the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session.

Keir Starmer

The United Kingdom Prime Minister, too, backed India at 79th session of the UNGA.

The Chilian President backed India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Luis Montenegro

Even with the change in leader, Portugese position has been consistent.

The Micronesian President supported permanent membership for India.

Vladimir Putin

The Russian President reiterated his support for India, Brazil, and an African country.

Anthony Albanese

The Australian Prime Minister extended his support in 2023.
