About 300 species of octopus can be found in every ocean. Most live on the seafloor, while some, like the paper nautilus, are found closer to the surface. They mainly eat crabs, shrimp and molluscs.
Octopuses are smart and can camouflage themselves. They change their colour and texture to hide from predators.
Their arms have many suckers that can move independently, due to a network of neurons that act like a brain, allowing them to touch, smell and manipulate things.
Octopuses have three hearts, one pumps blood around the body and the other two send blood to the gills.
Their blood is blue due to hemocyanin, which works better than haemoglobin in cold, low-oxygen water.
