Markhor is the largest of the goat family, reaching up to 1.6 metres long and weighing as much as 110 kg.
They are found in mountainous regions from Kashmir and Turkistan to Afghanistan.
Known for its majestic corkscrew-shaped horns, Markhor is often called the ‘screw-horned goat,’ and is Pakistan’s national animal.
Male Markhor has horns that can grow over 160 cm (60 inches), while females’ horns typically grow only up to 25 cm (10 inches).
During the mating season, males fight for dominance using their horns. Markhor prefers warmer, dry terrains and avoids deep snow and cold temperatures, staying below 2,200 metres in winter.
